On Sunday, Switzerland was located between a gradually flattening low pressure zone over the Mediterranean and a high pressure bridge that stretched from the Atlantic across Scandinavia to northern Russia. Mild and gradually drier air reached Switzerland with a weak easterly to slightly southeasterly upper air current. The influence of the Mediterranean low was still felt, especially in the first half of the day and on the southern side of the Alps and in the Alps.

North of the Alps quite sunny
The day began largely cloudy in the lowlands
. In places where it had rained the previous evening (see graph with total rainfall below), there was even some dense fog or deep fog. In the Aargau Reuss Valley, for example, the morning view out of the window was more reminiscent of mid-November than of the month of May, which is soon coming to an end.

Sahara dust in the air

One day later, on Saturday, May 20, 2023, the Saharan dust plume was also clearly visible on the True Color satellite image.
